Artist Statement
In my paintings I aim to project on canvas tactile feelings and associations evoked by particular materials. Textures emerging from the interplay of various items interest me for their ability to convey stories about different times, places and also people that were once there. I am interested in how our perception of an object is formed by its context (shadows, reflections, emptiness or pairings), rather than just its shape and silhouette.
Oil is my medium of choice for its functional characteristics and its ability to represent my temperament. Appreciation for classical works of both European and Oriental traditions was instilled in me by parents who were both professional artists. My career in film production design provided me with an additional dimension where I could research the role of aesthetics and textures in storytelling.
